Working Principle of Gate Valve

DBV gate valve manufacturer will introduce you how does a gate valve work. In the Gate valve principle, steam and gate will move in the downward direction across the fluid flow line. At this time, the handle wheel will be rotated in a clockwise direction. Keep in mind that at this time, the gate will be tightly located between the two seats. So there is no chance of leakage of fluid through the valves when it is completely closed.

On the other side, the gate and steam will move upward across the fluid flow line when the handle wheel is rotated in an anticlockwise direction. At the moment, the valve will be open from the closed Piston. So it allows the flow of fluid through the gate valve. There will be very little or no resistance to fluid flow when the Gate valve is completely opened.

If we talk about the semi-open conditions, we can also use the gate valve. However, there is only one issue, which is the erosion of the gate as the fluid will touch the gate when the valve is partially open. This is the main reason the gate valve is not used in semi-open conditions. Consequently, a gate valve should be used in entirely closed or completely open conditions.

Gate Valve Types

To meet the different demands of global clients from different industries, DBV wholesale gate valve supplier offers various types of gate valves.

Gate valve types according to the kind of closing elements

  • Parallel disk Gate valve

It contains two disks, and at the point of closure, they are apart against seats through a spring. Knife gate valve is the famous type of parallel disk Gate valve. It has a flat gate between two parallel seats, which are upstream and downstream seats to get the shut-off. One of the parallel disk Gate valve features is that it is limited to low pressures and low-pressure drops.

  • Solid wedge Gate valve

The main advantage of a solid edge Gate valve is that it is the cheapest method used in the industry. The wedge shape is very useful in introducing a high supplementary seating load. This valve is appropriate for almost all fluids and also excellent for turbulent flow services. Moreover, it is very easy to install in any position.

One thing to consider is that it is impossible to reopen the valve until the system temperature reheats it. You can also call it thermal blinding.

  • Flexible Wedge Gate Valve

As the name depicts, this type of gate valve means that the wedge is flexible. It is a one-piece disk that is cut around the perimeter; however, there is a difference in size, shape, and depth. Such kind of gate valves does not cause any problem with thermal expansion and contraction. The good sign is that the disk is easy to open and able to compensate. Manufacturers usually use flexible wedge gate valves in steam systems to avoid thermal blinding.

  •  Split wedge Gate valve

As the name depicts, split wedges are divided into two separate halves. In this way, the wedge angle is easily set up between their outer faces to fit the seat. The good thing about split wedge is that it is self-aligning and self-adjusting to both seating surfaces.

Gate valve types as per the type of stem

  • Rising Stem Gate Valve with Outside Screw

The rising stem Gate valve is also known as OS and Y type Gate valve. OS & Y type means outside steam and York. The stem actually rises when it is opened and lowered when it is closed. So it gives an indication of the gate valve position. There is no chance of getting corrosion or erosion because the stem threads never contact the flow medium.

  •  Non-rising stem Gate valve

In a non-rising stem Gate valve, the stem is threaded into the gate. The good thing about non-rising stem Gate valves is that there is no rising and lowering of the stem, and also, the stem and handwheel move together. Also, there is a direct contact between the stem and the flow medium.

  • Knife Gate valve

Knife Gate valve is most commonly used in those industries which contain a high content of suspended solids. They are specially designed for different types of on-off and isolation services in the systems. The knife Gate valve has a great capability to handle corrosive, abrasive, viscous, as well as slurry media. These valves are truly beneficial because they have a very little drop in pressure, even in the fully open position. Knife Gate valves are not very costly and have a relatively low weight.

Knife Gate valves are commonly used to work in some of the harshest environments, especially where sharpened blades are used to cut through heavy liquids.

Normally, knife Gate valves are used in a completely opened or completely closed position. They are not designed to be used for regulating the flow unless they are designed for it.

So when the fluid is forced to pass or partially close to getting, there will be a vibration. It generally erodes the disk and seat. In addition, to protect against water hammer impacts, the knife Gate valves are specially designed to Slowly open and close.

Gate Valve Construction Details

Gate valves are usually constructed from cast carbon steel, cast iron, ductile iron, stainless steel, gunmetal, forged steels and alloy steels.

In the gate valves, there are three major components which are bonnet, body, and trim. The body of the valve is generally united to the piping. Usually, it is connected through screwed, flanged, or welded connections. Then the bonnet is connected to the body that contains the moving parts. Usually, the bonnet is joined with bolts to allow the proper maintenance and cleaning. On the other side, the valve trim includes the gate, the wedge, the stem, and the seat rings.

Gate Valve Advantages and Disadvantages

Gate valve advantages

  • Fluid resistance

One of the main advantages of gate valves is that it allows a very small fluid resistance. This is a very little fluid resistance caused due to the straight inner media channel of the body. This media channel allows the medium to flow directly through the valve without changing any direction.

  • Energy Efficiency

Fortunately, Gate valves are very efficient, and they are commonly known as energy-efficient valves. The reason is that direction of movement is perpendicular to the media flow direction. At this time, very little power is consumed whenever the gate valves are opened or closed. Therefore, Gate valves are better than globe valves. As they are very energy efficient, they are very helpful in reducing the total ownership costs.

  • Simple body

The gate valves are very easy to use and have a relatively simple body. They are also easier to operate as compared to isolation valves. Also, the isolation valves come in more Complex designs.

  • Dual flow direction

Gate valves are good in the sense of having the feature of dual flow direction. So they have the capacity to be used in any direction in the circuit. Also, the gate valves are not subjected to the medium’s directional flow. This is the main reason they are perfect for use in different pipelines where the flow direction may change depending on the medium.

  • Little erosion

Other types of valves have the danger of getting erosion, but Gate valves are good in the sense of experiencing very little erosion. So on the sealing surfaces, there is very little erosion when they are fully opened. Also, the gate valves are not subjected to erosion because of the valve’s tight seal functioning.

  • Minimum pressure loss

The gate valves do not function properly if there is a loss of pressure. This is the main reason gate valves are very successful because of the minimum pressure loss.

Gate valve disadvantages

  • The entire structure of a gate valve is quite complex.
  • The sealing surface is more prone to damage.

Gate Valve Installation Instructions

Fortunately, the gate valves can be used in any orientation; however, they are good if installed in an upright position. An upright position is very helpful in bigger sizes to get the handwheel excess.

Keep in mind that you have fully verified the material of the gate valves as well as disk and seat before installation. Also, ensure that you do storage, transportation and there are no defects in the gate valve material.

Before the installation of gate valves, you must complete all the welding works and make sure that the flange has cooled to ambient temperatures.

It would help if you also made sure that there is no waste, rust, debris, pickle paste, or welding residue before installation in the pipe.

Keep in mind that there should be no misalignment of the gate valve related to the flange. This is the most common problem while installing the gate valves when there is not the proper alignment of the pipe.

Spacing bolts

While installing the spacing bolts, there is no damage to the valve seat. Also, adjust the two flanges’ faces to keep up space when the piping is spread open.

Make sure to insert the bolts when the pipes are centered. It is done so that the bottom of the valve can easily rest upon the pipes and prevent the valve from falling.

To apply even pressure, it is good to tighten the bolts at different stages. Ensure that the seal is formed between the gasket, flanges, and valve.

Keep in mind that there is a proper operation of the valve at different times when the installation is complete. It is to ensure that the valve has not moved during installation.

Gate Valve Maintenance

  1. If the gate valve is not regularly used, then cycle the valve once a month.
  2. Before the performance of any maintenance, relieve the system pressure.
  3. The installation sequence should be reversed to remove from the pipework.
  4. By removing the upper body, such as the stem and bonnet, replace the gate valve.
  5. To replace the gate valve with the new part, screw out the gate. Then install the upper body and refit it into the line.
